As far as nuclear accidents go, the disaster at Chernobyl was one of the worst that has ever occurred. As a result of the accident, the global power industry was shaken to its core. If you’ve never heard of it, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred in 1986. Located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, it was a nuclear power plant called Pripyat. When one of the reactors ripped apart, radiation started leaking out, causing the entire power station to melt down along with the surrounding city.
There is still radioactivity near the power station, therefore a large area is still off-limits. Radiation has wiped out everything in its path, including the city and its ecosystem. Tourists are taken on tours of these locations, which is interesting. The city has remained motionless since its evacuation. When the authorities evacuated the residents, they left nothing but the schools, public places, and the power plant just as they found them. Romain Veillon traveled to Chernobyl on a photography tour, and the photographs he took are included in this article.
