Qizai, the only known brown panda in the world, has captivated scientists and animal lovers alike. Abandoned by his mother at two months old, however, Qizai faced bullying from other pandas growing up. It is thought that his brown and white coat is due to some genetic mutation as his mother was black and white before she disappeared into the jungle.

Qizai lives in Foping Panda Valley and is taken care of by a personal keeper who makes sure Qizai has plenty of food and is safe. Now 9 years old and weighing over 220 pounds, Qizai’s keeper describes him as “gentle, funny and adorable”, while also having a unique look unlike any other panda! Scientists are eager to uncover more about the mystery surrounding this unique brown panda – should he successfully mate with an 18-year-old female panda named Zhu Zhu there could be one more just like him!
