0

An historic rock castle in Sri Lanka known as Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri. According to the historical records, this location formerly included a sizable forest; however, as a result of the storms and landslides, it was transformed into a hill. After then, in the fifth century A.D., the hill was transformed into the new capital of Sri Lanka. On top of it, King Kashyapa (477–495) constructed a palace that was embellished with frescoes.

In addition to this, he constructed a doorway in the form of a huge lion perched on a plato and leading up to the palace. This entrance also earned the stronghold its name, “Sinhagiri,” which literally translates to “the lion rock.”

As soon as the king passed away, the city that had been the capital began to function as a Buddhist monastery. This continued until the 14th century. As one of the most well-preserved examples of ancient urban layout, the rock fortress of Sigiriya is now included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.

This fortified garden city of Sigiriya rock fortress is an exceptional master piece of ancient urban planning, landscape and architecture, construction technology, exceptional hydraulic engineering and management, ancient fine art with unique harmony between nature and human imagination, and all of these living examples proved that it was a Well Planned City and Palace in the 5th Century AD. The rock castle of Sigiriya is commonly referred to as a “Living Museum” due to the fact that it is widely regarded as being among the oldest urban sites from Asia’s first millennium that have been kept in the greatest possible condition.

According to the historical accounts, there was also a mirror wall that could be found on the path that led to the palace. This brick wall was previously covered with white plaster, which made the wall extremely reflecting. As the monarch walked along the wall, he was able to see himself in the reflection.

The world’s best wall paintings from any era were created using the Sigiriya fresco style. The lovely maidens depicted in the Sigiriya fresco paintings have their hair styled in a high bun to reveal their luscious complexions and oval faces. Their eyes convey emotions ranging from vivacity to tranquility, and they have large breasts. On their arms, ears, and arms, they have ornate gems. They wear armlets in addition to bangles, and their ears are adorned with large hoops.

The centuries that followed saw Sigiriya fall into complete disrepair, and it wasn’t until the 19th century that it was repurposed as a military outpost for the Kandyan rulers. Later on, in the year 1832, it was a British military officer by the name of Jonathan Forbes who once more rescued Sigiriya from historical obscurity and brought it back into the limelight. Under the direction of H.C.P. Bell, the Archaeological Department began conducting archaeological excavations on Sigiriya in the year 1894. Nearly a century and a half later, in 1982, the Central Cultural Fund took up the responsibility, and it has been carrying it out with tremendous success ever since.
