Craig Williams, a painter based in Australia, creates stunning bird portraits by employing the pages of vintage books as both the source of his artistic inspiration and the substrate upon which he depicts the birds. He creates intentionally jarring juxtapositions between his artwork and written text by employing book pages as his canvas.
The artist who taught himself explains that his approach comprises painting in acrylic in thin layers building up the form with layered feather detailing. “At times, portions of the text may show through the paint in an almost shadowy way that links the bird to the page but also contributes to the underlying feather features,” he continues. “This not only binds the bird to the page but also contributes to the underlying feather details.” In the gallery that follows, you will find some examples of his beautiful work.
