Carey Fruth, a photographer based in San Francisco, has created a photo series titled “American Beauty” in which women of many body types pose in ethereal beds made of flower petals. Her aim with the project is to rethink what constitutes “American beauty.” A steamy sequence from the 1999 film of the same name, in which Kevin Spacey dreamed about one of his daughter’s friends, served as the impetus for the creation of the character Fruth.
“By stepping into a fantasy dream girl world and by letting go of that fear, they free themselves up to direct that energy they once wasted on telling themselves that they weren’t good enough to other areas of their life,” Fruth told Huffpost. “They free themselves up to direct that energy they once wasted on telling themselves that they weren’t good enough to other areas of their life.”
